For East West Topicals…
It All Started With Sport.
From soccer to track, Audie and Malik’s love for sport began in their early years. As we all know, sport often comes with an unwelcome companion…injury. Operating within western medicine, every injury for Audie and Malik were met with a protocol blindly followed since the '70s - Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation. RICE provided temporary pain relief to Audie, but nothing more. The unproductive prescribed icing and NSAIDs left him frustrated, but also caused long term damage as he was later diagnosed with Cold Bi Syndrome.
Finally, Audie was introduced to a much-needed solution: herbal topicals. Learning about these powerful medicines in his classes at the National University of Natural Medicine, he knew more people needed access to this knowledge. The relief he felt after 10 years of pain led him to co-found East-West Topicals with Malik Mahmud. East West Topicals was founded to create accessible, user-friendly versions of Chinese Medicine herbs. As Doctors of Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine, Dr. Foxe and Dr. Mahmud’s vision is to bridge classical Chinese medicine formulas and modern western culture, with a mission of supplying natural products that are safe, economical, effective, ethically sourced, and environmentally friendly.
But how does it work?
A great strength of Chinese medicine is the individualized treatment plan. There is no “one size fits all” formula for pain. There are 3 base formulas to be used specifically designed for each of the three main stages of healing after injury; 1. Inflammatory Phase, 2. Proliferative Phase, and 3. Remodeling Phase.
-
Helps reduce inflammation, increase clotting, and subdue pain.
-
Helps move stagnant blood, reduce pain, and promote circulation.
-
Helps accentuate the remodeling phase, especially bone and tendon injuries.

Malik Mahmud is a graduate of the National University of Natural Medicine’s Classical Chinese Medicine program. He currently works in private practice at Wellness in Motion Boston as an Acupuncturist and Herbalist. Malik dealt with various injuries as a high school and collegiate runner and continually sought out holistic healing methods to treat the all encompassing nature of any high level athletic endeavor. After being introduced to Chinese Medicine via Chinese language courses in college, he resonated with the holistic view of the body and universe as a whole. This early interest would soon push Malik to embark on the journey of becoming a Chinese Medical Physician. At NUNM, he met and befriended Audie Foxe, a fellow athlete with similar ideals for the world of athletics. Together, they would start East West Topicals.

Auden Foxe is a graduate from NUNM in Portland, OR where he obtained his doctorate of science in Acupuncture and Chinese Herbs. His journey to become an Acupuncturist and Chinese herbalist began through his love of sport and movement. After countless injuries and a strong influence from Dr. Jeff Fairley-a Physical Therapist local to Claremont, CA-he studied Kinesiology to prepare for medical school. During his final year at the University of La Verne, a Qi Gong elective led by Julie Wheeler changed his course. He pivoted from Physical Therapy to Chinese medicine and moved to Portland. This is where he met Malik Mahmud, who would become cofounder of East West Topicals.
